On the fresh, clear waters of the Sorgue, the centre of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a really lovely place to stroll all year round. Highlights include its magnificent church and its water wheel, which hark back to an era when the river was the essential driving force for emerging industry.

The parting of the waters

This is the place where the Sorgue, which springs from the ground less than 10 km from here in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, divides into two channels which then flow either side of the centre of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

Floating market

Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is renowned for its Sunday market. Each year on the first Sunday in August, a floating market takes place, a nod to a time when market gardeners from the surrounding area came to sell their produce on board "neguo-chin" (literally, "drown-dogs"), these flat-bottomed barges of questionable stability...
