Carpentras

Carpentras

In the very heart of the Vaucluse, the town of Carpentras looks onto the Giant of Provence, and has much to offer visitors.

Once a major town of the Comtat Venaissin where Popes chose to spend time, you can still find many traces of this glorious past in and around the town centre.

Less touristy than Avignon, Carpentras nevertheless has plenty to offer visitors, with its heritage, its charming little squares and its gourmet pit-stops where gastronomy is king. At the gateway to Mont Ventoux, an area of outstanding natural beauty and its many discovery and sports activities await you.

The truffle market

Every Friday in winter, between mid-November and mid-February, the town of Carpentras is bustling with its prestigious black truffle market.

This is the meeting place for merchants, restaurant owners and brokers who come to buy the precious black diamond from local truffle growers.

The price varies from one period to the next, between €850 and €1500, and often peaks before the end-of-year festivals.  Carpentras market is at the very forefront of truffle trade in Europe, as it fixes the market rate by determining the price.
